Stratum (or Strata)
Definition
A stratum denotes a subset of the population that is being sampled. Stratification is the process of dividing the population into strata. Strata are created in such a way that units exhibit a low variability (relative to a specific characteristic) within the same strata but a large variability between different strata. This process improves the accuracy of the sample if an independent sample is chosen from each stratum. The basis for stratification can be geographical, by income bracket, by socio-economic groups.
